A beechwood handled brewer’s gimlet, also known as a spile gimlet.
Shorter and more robust than normal gimlets, the brewers gimlet was used to bore a vent hole in the bung to allow the contents to be drawn off.
This example has a barrel shaped beechwood handle which was also used to insert the ‘spile’ plug in the vent hole to reseal the barrel.
Previous owner's marks ‘H.BOND’ on the handle.
53/8 inches overall length.
