WW2 RAF Escape Axe by CHILLINGTON *SOLD*
An early WW2 RAF escape axe or hatchet by the CHILLINGTON Tool Company of Wolverhampton.
Carried in a variety of aircraft to aid escape, the rounded triangular cut out in the head fitted over a mounting lug/bracket within the aircraft.
This CHILLINGTON axe is faintly marked 'CHILLINGTON 1938 27N/1' with the Air Ministry Crown over AM mark on one side of the head.
The rubber encasing the handle is marked 'TESTED 20,000 VOLTS' on one side and 'PATENT No 19242' on the other. The patent rubber handles were used to protect the crew should they need to cut through electric cables during their escape.
The head is approximately 71/2 inches wide.
