SPEAR & JACKSON 88 A Rip Cut Panel Saw for W DOVE & SONS - 26 inch Silver Steel *SOLD*
A wonderful skew back SPEAR & JACKSON 88 A rip cut panel saw.
The blade etching reads 'MADE EXPRESSLY FOR W.DOVE & SONS YORK'. William Dove & Sons were ironmongers based in York's Pavement.
Believed to be from the early 20th century, the etch on this No.88 A saw also reads 'MADE BY NEW PROCESS SPEAR & JACKSON WARRANTED SILVER STEEL SHEFFIELD 88A' and 'EXTRA HIGH TEMPER IF POSSIBLE SET WITH A HAMMER INSTEAD OF A PLIER SAW SET SET POINTS OF TEETH ONLY RE-SET FREQUENTLY'.
Very good beechwood handle with five brass fixings including the 'S&J' with Crown 1 inch medallion. Tiny chip to the lower spur/horn.
The 261/8 inch blade is straight with all teeth (stamped '61/2 PTS' at the heel) present and well formed. The cutting edge has a (we believe intentional) slight belly curve.
The surface is very smooth with a high gloss finish, something we have tried to show in the photos.
Some minor surface staining spots.
293/8 inches overall length.
A very nice example.
