Unusual Wooden Technical Jack Plane with MATHIESON Iron *SOLD*
An unusual wooden technical jack plane.
Technical jack planes, also known as sunk handle, school jack planes or razee jack planes, have the handle set lower in a reduced section at the heel.
The smaller versions, usually 12 inches long are sometimes labelled 'gent's' jack planes.
Normally supplied with open handles, this 113/4 inch long example has a closed handle similar to those found in try and jointer planes.
On close inspection the body of this plane is made up of three sections, the main centre section with two 3/8 inch wide sections, one on either side.
It is impossible to tell without dismantling but this plane feels heavier than expected at the toe, perhaps a weight was inserted during construction with the two side sections fitted to disguise the weight housing?
Fitted with a 21/4 inch blade iron marked 'WARRANTED ALEXR MATHIESON & SON CAST STEEL' with the Star and Crescent trade mark and matching cap iron.
Beechwood stock, handle and scroll top wedge.
Previous owner's stamps 'JN COUTTS'.
A few surface knocks and scratches.
Another unusual and intriguing plane.
