Wooden English Pattern Jack Plane with Lignum Sole
An interesting improved English pattern jack plane with a lignum sole.
The style is obviously English but this plane has a 1/2 inch thick lignum vitae sole, very similar to those European jack planes made by ULMIA and ECE EMMERICH of Germany.
A heavier than normal jack plane at 51/4 lbs or 2.4 kilos.
Fitted with a good length 21/4 inch PARRY & SON of London blade and cap iron. The blade is marked 'PARRY & SON 329 OLD ST. E.C.1 WARRANTED' with the Sundial trade mark.
The front/toe of the plane has a 'P&S' mark within an oval indicating that this plane was either made by or for PARRY & SON.
The bed cut out where the cap iron screw fits is stamped 'E'.
The rear tote handle has strengthening strips on both sides, another improvement to reduce the risk of breaking across the grain.
Domed strike button to the toe, similar on the heel.
There are a few small knocks and scratches and a short crack to the right wedge lug.
Previous owner's stamp 'C.BATHURST'.
A quality plane that appears to mix the best of English and German manufacture.
