A scarce early STANLEY No.18 adjustable knuckle joint block plane.
Believed to be a type 4, circa 1898.
Excelsior side profiles.
The first of the No.18s to feature the patent Hand-y finger grip depressions to the sides.
Four patent dates to the lateral lever plus 'STANLEY' to the rear hook.
Eccentric lever marked 'PAT FEB 20 94'.
'S' foundry marks to the bed, back of the lever cap and under the sliding sole section. Also marked '3'.
The two piece lever cap is marked 'STANLEY PAT DEC 28 86' and has lost most of its nickel plating to the top surface
Fitted with a, probably original, 15/8 inch cutter marked 'STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO', 1 inch remains below the slot.
Very tidy adjustable mouth for fine or coarse work.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.
