Antique Mitre Plane by MOON *SOLD*
An interesting early English cast mitre plane with rosewood infill by MOON of London.
The cupid's bow bridge is marked 'MOON 4 LITTLE QN-ST LINCOLN'S INN-FIELDS LONDON', this address is attributed to Mrs Anne MOON & Co between 1831-1851.
Stepped toe and heel.
The steel toe section is a separate piece fitted to 4 lugs that are cast into the main body, please see the images for a better understanding.
The front and rear infill are in rosewood however a previous owner has replaced the wedge and iron at some stage.
Fitted with a 2 inch wide WARD blade iron.
The front infill has a nicely shaped profile leading down the throat, although the fixing screw through the front came fitted in the plane we believe this may not be original as it is a countersunk screw and the hole is not.
Only lightly cleaned to retain the fantastic patina, if you look closely it is possible to see two shallows on the right side near the toe where previous owner's fingers have gradually worn the metal down over time.
91/4 inches overall length.
A rare example.
