CHILLINGTON WW2 Air Ministry RAF Escape Axe or Hatchet

A tidy Air Ministry escape hatchet by the Chillington Tool Company of Wolverhampton.

Fitted into RAF aircraft during and after World War 2 for use by aircrew to cut their way out if required.

Marked '27N/1' with the C within a Square CHILLINGTON trade mark and the (faint) Air Ministry Crown over AM mark on the head.

The design patent No.515767 relates to the rubber handle and was granted to CHILLINGTON in 1939.  This patent number is marked on one side of the rubber handle with 'TESTED 20 000 VOLTS' on the opposite side.
