Early MARPLES Firmer Chisel or Mortice Chisel - 7/16 inch
An early 7/16 inch cast steel firmer or mortice chisel by MARPLES of Sheffield.
Believed to date from the second half of the 19th century.
Marked 'W.MARPLES & SONS CAST STEEL' on the top of the blade.
Not marked with the 'HIBERNIA' or Shamrock trade marks.
The blade flares slightly from 3/8 inch wide at the bolster to 7/16" at the cutting edge.
Very good boxwood handle with brass ferrule, previous owner's stamps 'G.ATKINSON'.
