Early MARPLES M4 Smoothing Plane - Black on Black *SOLD*
A tidy and early example of the MARPLES M4 smoothing plane.
Black body and frog (black on black) and believed to be from the 1930s.
'MARPLES SHEFFIELD ENGLAND' with the Shamrock trade mark is cast into the main body. No 'M' number.
Fitted with a good length 2 inch MARPLES blade iron marked 'W.MARPLES & SONS SHEFFIELD ENG.' with the Shamrock trade mark. Matching 'CORRECT ANGLE FOR GRINDING' cap iron. 17/8 inches remain below the slot.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Much of the original black finish remains.
Good rosewood handles with much of the original lacquer finish and part complete trade label on the rear handle. There is an old but firm repair to the rear handle, please see close-up images.
The majority of the nickel plating is missing from the front of the lever cap, please see close-up image.
Some surface knocks,scratches, pitting and staining spots.
