An early first example of the RECORD 05 1/2 SS Stay Set jack plane.
The first RECORD 05 1/2 planes were fitted with a 21/4 inch blade iron between 1931 and 1939 when they increased the width to 23/8 inches.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Fitted with a near full length straight topped 21/4 inch RECORD best crucible cast tungsten steel blade iron and the extra thick Stay Set cap iron, marked 'PATENT No 362743', which enables sharpening of the blade without removing the cap iron and eliminates chatter. 21/16 inches remain below the slot.
This early example has the first pattern lateral lever with no markings and the revolving disc, the hand peened fitting of the lateral lever wing indicates an early date as production soon changed to leave a criss-cross machine pattern, please see close-up image.
First pattern frog, screws, Y lever and brass adjusting nut.
The lever cap is marked 'SS RECORD' and retains much of its red background finish to the lettered areas. Some patchy plating wear, please see images.
Retains the majority of its original blue finish.
Very good rosewood handles with much of their original lacquer finish, part trade label remains to the top of the rear handle.
Some minor surface knocks, scratches, pitting and staining spots, please see images.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
15 inches overall length.
A very nice example of an early RECORD plane.
