A very good early 20th century American STANLEY No.53 adjustable mouth spokeshave.

This early example has the brass adjusting screw.

'BAILEYS PATENT JULY 1858' is cast into the back of the handles, only faintly legible due to the thickness of the original black japanned finish, please see images.

Fitted with a good length 21/8 inch steel cutter marked 'STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO'.

Retains much of its original black finish.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.

101/8 inches overall length.
