Early MARPLES Mortice Chisel - 5/8 inch
A scarce early 5/8 inch cast steel mortice chisel by MARPLES of Sheffield.
Believed to date from the second half of the 19th century.
Marked 'W.MARPLES & SONS CAST STEEL' on the top of the blade.
The blade flares slightly from 1/2 inch wide at the bolster to 5/8" at the cutting edge.
Wonderful tapered octagonal ashwood handle with leather washer, one hairline crack near the washer.
No previous owner's stamps.
