A scarce little used, probably unused, shipwrights' claw hammer head.

Whilst trying to identify this hammer correctly we came across Salaman's description of a Shipyard Loftman's Hammer:

"A round faced claw hammer with parallel claws which are longer and further apart than usual.  Used to enter and withdraw the special nails around which battens were bent when 'lifting' a mould or pattern from the loft floor."

Alternatively, the MATHIESON eighth edition catalogue lists a No.1258 Ships Carpenters' Coppering Hammer that bears a striking resemblance to this example.

Domed face 11/2 inches in diameter.

7 inches between the face and claw.

Chamfered neck.

Retains almost all of its original 'black' finish.

Handwritten number to one cheek.

A few surface spots, please see images.
