28 Vintage Burnishing Tools - Burnishers
A scarce collection of 28 burnishing tools to include:
9 bloodstone burnishers (?), the widest head is 11/16 inches (27mm) wide, the smallest 1/2 inch (13mm) wide, plus
19 steel burnishers with a variety of head shapes and one extra head only.
Three of the steel burnisher heads are marked 'R.SMITH'.
Hardwood handles with various initials and identification marks.
A few missing ferrules and the steel ferrule of one of the bloodstone tools has split, please see images.
Believed to have been used for burnishing Sheffield plate, silver or EPNS however similar tools are used by leatherworkers, bookbinders, jewellers etc. There is an interesting article about similar tools and their use on the Museums Sheffield website - Burnishing Tools
The bloodstone burnishers measure between 85/8 (219mm) and 97/16 inches 9240mm) overall length with the steel burnishers being between 65/8 and 9 inches overall.
