IBBOTSON BROTHERS Antique Try Square
An antique brass plated rosewood try square by IBBOTSON BROTHERS of Sheffield.
IBBOTSON BROTHERS were a famous Sheffield business dating back to the end of the 18th century and possibly best known for their Globe Works factory in the heart of Sheffield, one of the oldest surviving cutlery and tool factories. A quick internet search will provide plenty of detail on the importance of IBBOTSON BROTHERS and their Globe Works to the history of Sheffield tool making.
This rare square is marked 'IBBOTSON BROTHERS & CO BEST CAST STEEL SHEFFIELD' with three Crown marks on the 9 inch blade.

Rosewood stock with brass top plate and shields.
The brass shields have a lovely naive look to them when compared to the shields on later produced squares.
No obvious previous owner's marks.
The rosewood stock is approximately 73/8 inches long by 15/8 tall (excluding the brass plate) by 11/16 inch thick overall.
1013/16 inches by 79/16 inches overall.
A scarce and interesting piece of history.
