Early RECORD 04 1/2 Smoothing Plane
A tidy early example of the RECORD 04 1/2 smoothing plane.
Believed to be from the mid to late 1930s.
Fitted with a, probably original, straight topped 23/8 inch RECORD best crucible cast tungsten steel blade iron and matching cap iron, 9/16 inch remains below the slot.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
This early example has the first pattern lateral lever with no markings and the revolving disc. First pattern frog, screws, Y lever and brass adjusting nut.
Plenty of the original blue finish remains.
The lever cap has very good nickel plating and retains almost all of its red background finish to the lettered area.
Very good rosewood handles with patches of the original lacquer finish, remains of the trade label to the top of the rear handle.
Previous owner's stamps 'C.HALL' to either side of the rear handle.
Usual signs of use with some surface scratches, pitting and staining but a tidy example of an early RECORD plane.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
97/8 inch sole length, 103/16 inches overall length.
