Antique American STANLEY No.4 Smoothing Plane - Type 7 *SOLD*
A nice example of a 19th century American STANLEY No.4 smoothing plane.
Believed to be a type 7 circa 1893 - 1899.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Fitted with a good length 2 inch STANLEY blade iron marked 'STANLEY PAT APL 19 92', 17/8 inch remains below the slot.
Unusually there are only two patent dates on the lateral lever 'PAT. 10 21 84 7 24 88', but there is a space where the '2 8 76' date would normally be found, please see close-up image.
'S' casting mark behind the frog with the 'B' casting mark on the underside of the frog and back of the lever cap.
A few minor chips to one lower corner of the lever cap, please see close-up image.
Good rosewood handles, the rear handle has an old but firm repair, please see close-up images. Previous owner's stamp 'R.C.HARRISON' on the right side.
The majority of the original black finish remains.
A few surface scratches, pitting and staining spots.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
815/16 inch sole length, 93/8 inches overall length.
