Edward PRESTON (junior) was the eldest son of Edward PRESTON (senior) and, according to the available records, began working for his father in the early 1850s as an apprentice planemaker.  By 1864 Edward (junior) had started his own business specialising in wooden spirit levels and by 1867 his advertisements described the business as wholesale manufacturers of a large range of tools including box and ivory rules, spirit levels, squares & bevels, saw sets, spill machines etc. etc.

The three sons of Edward (junior) joined the business in 1889 and the name was changed to EDWARD PRESTON & SONS.
