A very tidy and little used RECORD Calvert Stevens CS88 smoothing plane.

Similar in size to a 41/2 smoothing plane.

The CS88 smoothing plane was introduced in 1988 and only had a very short production run up to October 1990.  The CS refers to Martin Calvert (production engineer) and Mel Stevens (plane production manager) who developed the plane and included various earlier innovations such as a Stay Set type cap iron and a Norris style adjuster.

These planes are heavy at approximately 6 pounds or 2750 grams and were meant to fill the gap left by the earlier English and Scottish infill planes.

Each of these limited edition planes has its production number in the body casting under the rear handle, this plane is number 202, please see close-up.

Fitted with a near full length 23/8 inch original laminated blade iron marked 'RECORD CALVERT STEVENS' and matching Stay Set cap iron.

Indian rosewood handles.

Gunmetal lever cap.

Retains its 'racing green' enamelled finish throughout.

A few very minor surface scratches and spots, please see images.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.

In the original red baize slide top wooden box (a few minor surface knocks and scratches to the base, please see images.

101/4 inches overall length.

A fine example of a rare plane.
