A rare graduated set of 10 wooden side bead moulding planes by VARVILL of York.

Sizes: 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and 1 inch.

Each is marked 'VARVILL & SONS EBOR WORKS YORK' with the Bishops Mitre trade mark on the toe with the relevant size stamped on the heel.  Apart from the 5/8 all are also stamped 'BEAD' on the heel.

The three smaller sizes are fully or solid boxed with all others boxed.

All of the boxwood is in very good condition with no cracks or splits, there is a small chip the the rear of the front boxing strip on the 1/2 inch plane, please see close-up image.

Good length blades irons (a few surface pitting and staining spots) and original wedges.

Various letter stamps by the rear of the wedge mortices - A, B, E, P (x2) and Y (x5).  These are thought to be the marks of the individual plane hand or plane maker.

Previous owner's stamp 'J.MOORE' to the toe of each plane.

A few minor surface knocks and scratches.

9⁹/₁₆ inches overall length.

A fine set of moulding planes, it will be hard to find better.
