War Production American STANLEY 4 1/2 Smoothing Plane - Type 17
A tidy American STANLEY No.41/2 smoothing plane.
This example is a type 17 WW2 plane made between 1942 - 1945.
The war production planes typically have a thicker and heavier casting, as in this example.
Fitted with a 23/8 inch STANLEY blade iron marked 'STANLEY MADE IN USA' with matching cap iron, 11/16 inch remains below the slot. The blade is also stamped '244' on the back indicating that it was produced in the second quarter of 1944.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Retains much of its original black finish.
Very good hardwood handles with long screw type fittings rather than the usual rod and brass nut, old but firm repair to the top of the rear handle. Previous owner's mark 'P MANN' plus a possible post code to the left side of the handle.
Hard rubber adjusting nut.
Small chip to the lower right corner of the lever cap.
There are two hairline cracks to the sides of the mouth and a small casting blow hole about 1/2 inch behind the mouth, please see close-up images.
A few surface knocks and scratches.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
