A nice smaller size beechwood compass smoothing plane by William BURTON of Liverpool.

Faint but legible mark 'W BURTON & SON' to the toe.

William BURTON is listed in BPM4 at two different addresses in Liverpool between 1807 and 1811.

This plane comes with excellent provenance in that it belonged to Henry Binnington, the head of manufacturing, workshops and craftsmen at the Sheard, Binnington & Co cabinet making factory in Doncaster.  Stamped 'H.BINNINGTON' at the toe.

Fitted with a good length 17/8 inch wide J WALTERS & CO GLOBE WORKS SHEFFIELD blade iron with matching cap iron.
