Add To Your WishlistRare Set of 3 SORBY Gutter Planes

An unusual and rare set of three gutter planes or round soled bench planes by SORBY of Sheffield.

Also sometimes referred to as spout planes.

This set includes a typical round sole gutter plane, a similar but narrower and deeper plane and the first toothing gutter plane we have seen.

All are marked 'I SORBY SHEFFIELD with the Mr Punch trade mark on the toe.

Each also has a '6' stamped on the top of the stock behind the bed opening, most likely the mark of the individual plane maker or hand, please see images.

All are fitted with their original SORBY blade irons, the narrow plane has a 1 1/2 wide inch iron, the wider plane a 2 1/4" iron and the toothing plane is fitted with a 2 1/4" serrated iron.

Original wedges marked 'P', 'P' and 'T' to the backs.

These are genuine gutter planes rather than converted jack planes as can be seen by the uniform width of the mouths.

Although these were thought to be used to cut wooden gutters or other hollow and wide grooves, some believe that the wide mouth and rounded cutting edge indicates they are in fact an earlier type of scrub plane used to quickly remove stock during timber preparation.

As for the toothing plane, we're stumped!

All are stamped 'A P P A' to the left side of the stock.

A few surface knocks and scratches plus an old, but firm, screwed repair to the base of one handle, please see close-up images.

137/8 inches (353mm) overall length.

A mysterious set of planes.
