PRESTON No.1368 D Shoulder Rebate Plane
A fine example of the largest of PRESTON's patent adjustable shoulder rebate planes.
The 1368 range was made up of 5 different size planes from the 5 inch long 5/8 inch wide No.1368 through to the largest No.1368D at 81/4 inches long and 11/2 inches wide.
Fully nickle plated, these planes had PRESTON's patent cutter adjustment.
The larger planes have a rectangular plate at the toe. This plate covers the weight reducing hollow in the front casting and incorporates the PRESTON trade mark.
This little used example retains almost all of its nickel plating and a near full length blade iron.
As with many of the quality planes of this period various parts are stamped with the same identifying number, as part of the manufacturing process, to ensure that the correct pieces stay together.
In this case, the number '12'.
The 1368 D was one of the planes whose production was continued by RECORD after they acquired the manufacturing rights to the PRESTON range of planes in the 1930s. The re-numbered RECORD 074 is now itself a rare and sought after plane.
With a very clean and crisp mouth this is the best we have seen and now part of a private collection.
Enjoy the photos.
