A scarce early low knob pre lateral STANLEY No.2 small smoothing plane.

Believed to be a type 4, circa 1872 - 1884

Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.

Fitted with a, most likely original, good length 15/8 inch blade iron marked 'STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO' and matching cap iron marked 'L BAILEY'S PATENT DEC 24 1867'. 11/4 inches remain below the slot.

The brass adjusting nut is marked 'BAILEY'S PATENT AUG 31 1858 AUG 6 1867' to the inside.

Very good rosewood low knob and rear handle.  There is a faint previous owner's stamp 'J ROWLAND' to the left side of the rear handle.

Retains much of its original black finish.

A few minor surface knocks, scratches and spots, please see images.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.

71/8 inch sole, 71/2 inches overall length.

A fine and honest early example of this sought after STANLEY plane.

*Please note that this plane will only be delivered/shipped to UK addresses.
