An interesting wooden handled tool.

At first we thought it was some kind of mortice chisel however closer inspection indicates it may be some kind of splitting tool.

The cutting edge has inside bevels to the left, right and lower sides with the upper edge being set back from these.

The back of the opening contains a v shaped edge that would split whatever touches it in half.  This with the other upper set back edge would effectively result in three strips of ¹/₄ inch (6mm) width.

The surfaces are pitted and we can find no evidence of a maker's mark.

Wonderful octagonal handle.

The blade is 3¹/₄ inches (82mm) long from the cutting edge to where it meets the handle.

8³/₈ inches (213mm) overall length.
