A clean and tidy WS No.4 smoothing plane by WS Tools, part of the WS MANUFACTURING COMPANY of Birmingham.

Marked 'No 4' to the toe with 'BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND' plus the WS trade mark flanking the rear handle.

Fitted with a good length 2 inch original blade iron marked 'WARRANTED SHEFFIELD CAST STEEL' and matching cap iron with the angle marks and WS trade mark.

The machining of the central slot is not perfect and leans slightly to one side as it nears the top of the blade, please see close-up image.

Retains the majority of its original blue finish throughout.

The brass lever cap has almost all of its original lacquer and the red WS mark.

Good hardwood handles.

Clear machining marks to the unfinished surfaces.

Some minor scratches and spots.

Faint previous owner's marks 'W A MOSEDALE' in various places.
