Rare American STANLEY 5 1/2 H Heavy Jack Plane *SOLD*
A rare American STANLEY 5 1/2 H heavy jack plane.
Although all examples of the 5 1/2 H and the smaller 4 1/2 H smoothing plane were made in the USA they were never listed in a STANLEY catalogue nor sold in the US.
Both were offered in the UK and Australia between 1902 – 1924 to compete with the English and Scottish infill planes by Norris, Spiers etc. popular at the time, hence this is where the majority of the planes have surfaced.
The castings are much thicker on the sole and sides, so much so that a normal 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 frog will not fit. The frog on this example is marked 5 1/2 which indicates that Stanley used the narrower frog from the early (pre-1939) 5 1/2 jack planes. The blade is also a narrower size at 21/4 inches.
This one is fitted with an American STANLEY 21/4 inch blade iron marked 'STANLEY MADE IN USA' with the Sweetheart trade mark.
The body is marked 'BAILEY' at the toe, 'PAT'D MAR-25-02 AUG-19-02' behind the frog and 'No 51/2 H' at the heel.
The lateral lever is marked 'STANLEY PAT. 7.24.88'.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Some surface scratches, pitting and staining patches.
Good rosewood handles, old repair to the top of the rear.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
Weighs in at 6 pounds.
15 inches overall length.
