Add To Your WishlistSmall MATHIESON Dovetailed Infill Smoothing Plane by a London Maker? *SOLD*

An interesting smaller than usual dovetail smoothing plane by MATHIESON of Glasgow.

Only 7 inches overall length and similar to the model No.842 improved smoothing plane as shown in the 1899 Mathieson catalogue.

That said, this example has a few features that indicate it may have been made for MATHIESON by one of the London makers.

Faintly marked 'A.MATHIESON & SON GLASGOW' with the Crescent & Star trade mark upside down on the front infill.

Not stamped 'STEEL' on the toe.

The back of the gunmetal lever cap, cap iron and rosewood bed are all stamped '4', please see close-up images.

The cap iron is of the type normally seen on NORRIS planes and without the brass collar that almost every MATHIESON cap iron seems to have.

Fitted with a near full length 2 inch MARPLES blade iron, probably a later replacement as this is not stamped '4'.

Nicely knurled gunmetal lever cap screw.

Good rosewood infill, old but firm repair to the front bun.

A few minor surface knocks, scratches, pitting and staining spots, please see images.

Previous owner's stamp 'C.HOBBY' ?.

7 inch sole length.

A nice example that raises a few questions.
