SKU: 3250ww
A very tidy dovetailed smoothing plane by MATHIESON.
Marked 'A.MATHIESON & SON GLASGOW' with the Crescent & Star trade mark on the toe.
Also stamped 'STEEL'. It is thought that this upright 'STEEL' mark identifies planes made for MATHIESON by NORRIS of London, please see Peter McBride's article here - PMcB Steel Marks
With that in mind this plane is actually an unmarked NORRIS No.4 dovetailed smoothing plane with a MATHIESON mark, a quick comparison with a NORRIS No.4 makes this difficult to deny.
Fitted with a replacement (?) ROBERT SORBY 21/8 inch parallel blade iron with the original MATHIESON cap iron.
Gunmetal lever cap and screw.
The back of the cap iron, the back of the lever cap and the blade bed are stamped '1'.
The lever cap also has '4' stamped to the back just below the screw hole.
There is an interesting and useful addition to the top of the rear infill, a cast hand rest that makes holding this plane much more comfortable. Surprisingly this is the first we have seen.
Very good rosewood infill.
A few minor surface knocks, scratches and spots, please see images.
Previous owner's stamps 'L.LEATHLEY'.
73/8 inches overall length.
Please see all images.
