A scarce and little used registered design wooden auger handle with three patent GILPIN bits.

This beechwood auger handle is possibly by GILPIN but is also very similar to the EDWARD PRESTON No.1482 14 inch universal auger handle.

Marked with the British Patent Office registered design diamond mark used between 1842 and 1883, please see close-up image.

Supplied with three patent GILPIN Gedge pattern auger bits with long square tangs to fit the handle.

Each bit is marked 'GILPIN WEDGES MILLS PATENT' with the Crossed Axe trade mark and stamped with the relevant size in sixteenths.

The bits are in sizes 5/8" (10/16ths), 7/8" (14/16ths) and 11/2" (24/16ths) and are between 131/2 and 191/8 inches overall length.

Previous owner's stamps 'J PERRIN' (on the handle) and 'J P' on the bit tangs.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.
