An unusual copper bodkin or fid.

Use unknown but could be a basket makers' bodkin or sailmakers' fid.

Period sailmakers' fids were typically made from lignum vitae, bone or other hard materials and are used to stretch holes in the canvas and/or when sizing or splicing rope.

This fid or bodkin has a 31/16 inch (78mm) copper spike showing plenty of signs of use, please see images.

Figured hardwood handle with steel ferrule, some shrinkage cracks however all appears firm and secure.

73/8 inches (188mm) overall length.

An interesting and tactile piece, please see images.
