A tidy and quite scarce WW2 war production American STANLEY No.4 smoothing plane.
Dismantled, cleaned, checked, oiled and reassembled.
Believed to be a type 17, circa 1942 - 1945.
Fitted with a 2 inch unmarked flat top blade iron and matching cap iron, a little over 1 inch remains below the slot.
Retains the majority of its original black finish throughout.
The war finish planes did not have nickel plated parts and this can be clearly seen on the lever cap which has almost all of its original red background to the STANLEY trade mark but no sign of nickel plating.
The cap is also marked 'PAT NO 1918750' which relates to the kidney shaped hole.
No frog adjustment, hard rubber depth adjusting nut.
Marked 'MADE IN USA' behind the frog.
Good hardwood handles with dark stain and full length steel bolts.
An old but firm repair to the rear handle, please see close-up images.
There is a small casting crack to the rear left corner of the mouth opening (please see close-up images) however this will not affect its use.
A few minor surface knocks, scratches and spots.
All parts move freely and tighten securely.
93/8 inches overall length.
