A scarce early model of the PRESTON No.9 smoothing plane.

This early example differs to the later No.9s in that it has none of the red paint of the later models and also no lateral adjuster.

Marked 'PRESTON' at the toe and 'No-9' behind the frog.

The slightly complicated depth adjuster is unique to PRESTON in that the adjuster is part of cap and fits into a slot on the cap iron.

The cap iron is marked 'E.PRESTON & SONS BIRM. ENG. PATENT' with the EP trade mark.  Additionally marked 'GRIND IRON TO THIS ANGEL PLACE BACK OF IRON ON HERE'.

The 2 inch blade iron is also marked 'E.PRESTON & SONS BIRM. ENG.' with the EP trade mark.

Very good rosewood front knob and rear handle, with full trade label on the rear.

9¹/₁₆ inch sole, hence the name.

Some minor surface staining, otherwise a very good example of a rare plane.
