A scarce ship or Shipwrights axe by William GILPIN of Cannock.
Also sometimes referred to as a Mastmakers or blocking axe.
The round shouldered blade is marked 'W GILPIN WEDGES MILLS WARRANTED 2' on one cheek and stamped 'C 71' on the other.
21/4 by 11/4 inch oblong poll, 53/16 " wide at the cutting edge.
127/16 inches from the poll to the cutting edge.
Good, probably original, hardwood shaft, 251/2 inches overall length.
This axe is 6 lb 23/8 oz or 2790 grams in total weight.
May require sharpening before use.
