A scarce 18th century four slide boxwood gaugers' rule by EDWARD ROBERTS of London, circa 1749 - 1776.
Historically used by Customs & Excise officers to calculate the volume of liquids and solids in casks and the applicable duty.
Clearly marked under one of the slides 'EDWD ROBERTS MAKER DOVE COURT OLD JEWRY LONDON'.
All sides are covered in a variety of scales and gauge points with the backs of each slide also containing numerous additional gauge points and divisors, please see all images.
The four slides move freely.
11/16 by 7/8 inch, 12 inches overall length
Despite being 250 years old this rule is in remarkably good condition with only a few minor chips, knocks, scratches and spots.
