A tidy MARPLES X4 smoothing plane.

Only in production for a short period and now quite a scarce plane.

The X4 was MARPLES attempt at a top of the range smoothing plane.  Infill type rear handle and frog, adjustable mouth and the unique lever cap all make this a very interesting smoother.

Fitted with its original 2 inch round topped, chamfered back blade iron marked 'W.MARPLES & SONS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND' with the Shamrock trade mark.

This one retains much of its original finish to both the casting and woodwork.

There is a small patch of lifting nickel plating to the lower edge of the lever cap, please see close-up image.

A few minor surface knocks, scratches, pitting and staining spots.

Previous owner's stamps 'G.BROOKS' to both sides of the rear infill.

All parts move freely and tighten securely.

9¹/₈ inch sole.

A nice example of a rare plane.
