A scarce smaller antique dovetailed mitre plane by Stewart SPIERS of Ayr.

At only 8 inches overall length, this wedged plane is an unusual size as wedged mitre planes of 6, 9 or 10¹/₂ inches are the only sizes listed in the catalogues and publications that we have access to.

Marked with the upside down 'SPIERS AYR' trade mark on the bridge.

Toe and heel extensions.

Fine mouth.

Tongue and groove joint where the two sole plates form the mouth, please see close-up images.

Both the blade bed and back of the rosewood wedge are stamped '1', please see close-up images.

Fitted with a good length 1³/₄ inch WARD uncut blade iron.

Original wedge, some bruising to the top.

Very faint previous owner's marks '?? DAVIS' and 'J G?????' to the top of the front infill plus 'M.SHERMER' within an oval border to the bed.

A very good example of a rare plane.
