A rare MATHIESON dovetailed smoothing plane with closed handle.

Marked 'A MATHIESON & SON GLASGOW' with the Crescent & Star trade mark to the toe.

Also stamped 'STEEL'.  It is thought that this upright 'STEEL' mark identifies planes made for MATHIESON by NORRIS of London, please see Peter McBride's article here - PMcB Steel Marks

With that in mind this plane is actually an unmarked NORRIS No.5 dovetailed smoothing plane with a MATHIESON mark and iron, a quick comparison with a NORRIS No.5 makes this difficult to deny.

Fitted with the original MATHIESON 21/4 inch parallel blade iron with matching cap iron.

The back of the iron, cap iron, lever cap and the blade bed are all stamped '00'.

Gunmetal lever cap and screw.

Very good rosewood infill.

Previous owner's stamp 'A McQUISTON'.

71/2 inch sole length.
